Where to get a great massage in Mazatlan

Most tourist places offer massages on the beach under tents or palapas that promise to relax visitors with the sounds of the nearby ocean. The problem with these kinds of setups is that, in my experience, it’s really just someone rubbing oil into my skin. I don’t feel especially relaxed.

So, I’m always asking locals or fellow expats or Facebook groups, or all of the above, where I can get a decent massage – down into muscle – from someone who actually knows the human body.

In Mazatlan, I found the answer with Brenda Moreno.

She’s a friend of a friend, so she came recommended by word of mouth. I’m so glad I listened. I needed her touch. You see, I’ve been going to the gym nearly every day and consistently working with weights for a few months for the first time in my life. A few weeks ago, I hired a personal trainer. Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s the weight lifting or the general aging of my 46-year-old body that causes small aches and pains now and then. Brenda relieved those aches and pains, and put me in a dreamy state of relaxation.

The first time I saw Brenda, she came to our rental unit with her massage table, blankets and oils. I had a relaxation massage and it was great. The second time I saw Brenda I went to her and I had the deep tissue massage, and it was excellent. I think I enjoyed it more the second time because after working out consistently with a personal trainer for a few weeks in between our visits, I was in special need of a deeper rub. But make no mistake – both massages were so totally worth it.

Brenda also is a hairstylist and gives pedicures and manicures. Her English is excellent, and her prices are fair – you will want to tip her.

As an early retirement budget traveler, I don’t often splurge on massages. But this was more of a necessity than a splurge due to my recent gym efforts. Now, if only the spouse would learn the proper technique, this expense may be wiped off our budget in future cities… 😉

Oh, and if you’re on the other side of Mexico, in Tulum, there is another woman I recommend for massages – her name is Margo and you can read my independent review on her here.

And I previously wrote about the gym I joined here. (The update to the gym post is that I did hire the personal trainer, and his name is Paul. I highly recommend him, too.)

(*As always, I get nothing in return for this positive, independent review, unlike other travel bloggers.)
